The history, geology of Haleakala, rare foliage, plants and wild life will be shared with you during the tour. Your tour then proceeds by van down to the 6,500 foot level (just before the national park entrance) where you are expertly fitted to your bicycle. From here your adventure on a Maui downhill bike tour begins. Your journey will take you down the slopes of Haleakala (the world's largest dormant volcano) winding through the upcountry communities, Kula, Makawao and Pukalani, ending in Paia at sea level. The Sunrise Tour: Upon arrival at the summit you will be escorted by your mountain guides to the rim of Haleakala Crater where you will view the spectacular sunrise that is so unique to this tour. Following the sunrise a continental breakfast is served, consisting of hot coffee, juice and pastries. During breakfast you will receive a comprehensive safety briefing followed by an informative tour of Haleakala National Park. Mountain Riders provides a break in the ride with a "no host "(buy your own) sit down breakfast at the Sunrise Market & Protea Farm in Kula. A tour of the Protea Farm is included. After your visit of the Sunrise Market concludes, you will pick up the bikes again continuing down Haleakala to Paia. Pick - Up Times: Resort pick-up begins from the furthest out and works back. Times also vary according to time of year. Expect to return about noon. As follows. Mountain Riders summer pick up schedule starts 1.55am to 3.00am. Mountain Riders winter pick up schedule starts 2.25am to 3.15am. There are no van riders with the sunrise tour. Those who wish to ride in the van can do so, but must pay the bike rider rate.

The Day Tour: Once at the summit of Haleakala, you will enjoy a continental breakfast stop consisting of hot coffee, juice and pastries where you will experience your first photo opportunity. You will then be given a tour of Haleakala National Park on your way back to the park where you will be expertly fitted to your bicycle and given a comprehensive safety briefing. Your bike down a volcano adventure begins here and will take you 28 miles down the slopes of Haleakala through Haleakala ranch, the upcountry community of Kula where you will stop for a sit down "no host"(buy your own) lunch at the Sunrise Market Protea Flower Farm. Following lunch and a tour of the flower farm you will continue your Maui bike tour into the historical town of Makawao and through Pukalani, coasting by pineapple and sugar cane fields to Pai'a and the ocean.

Continuing the ride, your journey heads down Baldwin Avenue and into the unique town of Paia. Paia is the last bastion for the plantation era on Maui. As you wind closer to Paia, the journey surrounds you with the last remaining green sugar cane fields in Hawaii. As you ride by the historical Paia Sugar Mill, you almost feel the past come alive through the whispering of the breeze. Arriving in Paia and after returning your bicycle, you will have the chance to stroll through this historical plantation town that still to this day remains rooted to the past. The Sunrise Adventure: This Maui Sunrise bike tour takes you to the summit of Haleakala for a breathtaking sunrise and a tour of the park. After touring the park your bike adventure begins at the staging area just outside the park. This is the most popular tour. Note: Dress warm as it is cold at the summit of Haleakala. Biking Tips Most people who select a biking tour fail to realize that the weather conditions at the summit of Haleakala are much different than sea level. Please remember to bring to Maui with you a sweat outfit for this journey. The temperature at 10,000 feet is about 30 degrees at sunrise and the summit never really warms up above 45 to 50 degrees during the day. You can dress in layers with shorts first and then the sweat outfit. The bike company will provide the wind breaker outfit. This includes helmet, gloves the pants and of course the jacket. Along the way down the mountain you can shed layers and store what you shed in the coach. Shoes are required. We recommend scheduling the bike tour on the first or second full day on the Island. Because you are not adjusted to the local time in the first few days and will find yourself waking up at about 4.00am, so it makes sense to schedule the bike during the first few days of your arrival. Biking down a volcano is serious fun and I truly believe that this activity is one that should be experienced. It's for the bold, the adventuresome and for those who desire to make Maui all they can. A must do, for sure.
