This is another event sponsored by Pacific Whale Foundation. The Ocean Odyssey is a 65' power catamaran that departs daily Maalaea Harbor. The check in for this event is at the Pacific Whale Foundation Store in the Maalaea Harbor Village Shops. This adventure takes you to the outer reef of Molokini away from the other charters. This means that there are less people, more marine life and more color in the reef, and this is a good thing. After Molokini they go to a second snorkel site at a place known as Turtle Arches. Not very deep and clear waters noted for being calm. Once again they do the reef tour. This charter offers a continental breakfast and a BBQ lunch. All the gear is provided and snorkel 101 in the main cabin on the way out to Molokini. Pacific Whale Foundation also offers at no charge marine life watching guides and a poster from the acclaimed marine artist Robert Lynn Nelson. Currently the Ocean Odyssey check in time is 7.30am with a 8.15am departure.Ê After check in the Pacific Whale Foundation staff will escort you to the slip for departure. The return time is 1.00pm. Molokini Tips
Regardless of the time of year, a Molokini tour is weather dependent. There are times when inclement weather will not allow a Maui charter boat to take a Molokini tour out to Molokini Island, in which case the captain will take you to a Maui snorkeling spot known as Coral Gardens, a site normally used for afternoon Maui Hawaii snorkel trips. This is a very protected area along the Pali Coast, with an abundance of marine life including Green Sea Turtles and other sites you can only see when you snorkel Maui. Do not be alarmed, however; weather rarely prohibits our Maui snorkel tours from allowing Molokini snorkeling, and even detoured Maui snorkel trips still have an amazing experience.
If you are an experienced diver, we highly recommend that you select a dive boat over one of these Molokini Crater charters, as you will have a more fulfilling experience and be allowed greater access to Molokini Maui than those who simply snorkel Molokini can achieve.
The snuba option offered on some of the Maui Hawaii snorkel trips is a great way to see if you wish to further explore the world of diving. Anyone over the age of 8 will be offered this exciting alternative to snorkeling in Maui, with the charter company conducting a Snuba 101 class before the tour enters the water. Snuba is done by filling a small raft with oxygen and attaching a 20’ hose to the raft. The person attached to the apparatus can now swim underwater like a fish without having to surface for air or bear the burden of a heavy compressed air tank while they take in the wonders of Molokini Crater and the underwater Molokini Maui experience. The oxygen generally lasts for 20 or 30 minutes, and is equally popular among both children and adults. Expect to pay roughly $50 extra per person for this option--it’s somewhat pricey, but amazingly fun!
