Dining on Maui from Makena to Kapalua is considered an experience in culinary magic. The preparations and presentations will leave you speechless, the ambiance breath taking and your evening, well romantic of course. Our guide to dining covers the most intimate dining as well as the local favorites. We have included restaurants off the beaten path and ones that are moderate in price. I believe we have them all, the restaurants worth dining at and the ones designed to enjoy. The best chefs, the best cuisine, the best ambiance for the finer dining; then there's the hole in the walls where the locals grind. Good food local style. Lulu's Bar & Grill: No Reservations Required Located in the Cannery Mall in Lahaina next to Safeway, Lulu's is sure to please your appetite. Just outstanding! Moderate in price with large portions, you won't leave hungry. Everything from appetizers, burgers to main entrees is reasonably priced and very good. The service is good. Happy hour begins at 5:00pm daily and continues to 6:00pm. During happy hour all menu selections are half price. Now that's a deal! Be fore warned though that Lulu's is packed for happy hour. You should arrive early for a table, have a cocktail and wait until 5.00pm to begin ordering. This will give you enough time to look over the menu, enjoy the ambiance and relax. Lulu's has become a one of our favorite restaurants to enjoy. Easy on our budget with excellent food. Fu Lin: Phone: 808-661-7071 1312 Front Street, Lahaina Hawaii 96761 Take out or dine in? Fu Lin's is probably without a doubt the best Chinese Restaurant on Maui. Fu Lin's is affordable. The food is all home made, lots of it and very good. Once again we are talking dining on a budget. A family of 4 can order 5 dishes and there will definitely be left over's to take home. Fu Lin's is open for lunch and dinner. Nice setting with views of the ocean and the boats moored in Lahaina Roads. No alcohol at Fu Lin's provides a quaint setting, good food with decent service, which makes for a nice family dining experience. We try and dine here as much as our budget allows. Roy's: Reservations: Kahana 808-669-6999 This is my family's favorite restaurant. Everything about Roy's in incredible! Pacific Rim is the menu. Seafood at its best. The sauces and presentations are just fantastic. The service is more than perfect. Roy's is also known for their desserts. My wife's favorite is their chocolate soufflé. I like the tarts and cobblers. They are yummy and round out this dining experience. We usually spilt one of the desserts. You can expect to pay about $30.00 a plate at Roy's for dinner. Roy's also offers a children's menu that includes their own appetizer entrée and dessert. My daughter always got a kick out of this because it looks like a grown up meal. Pretty cool for kids. The Plantation House: Kapalua: Reservations: 808-669-6299 The Plantation House is my daughter's favorite place to have dinner. The views are excellent at sunset. Reservations recommended before you arrive on Maui for the best tables with a view. Seafood is the main offering at the Plantation House. Sauce and presentation are outstanding. The service is great. This restaurant is upscale and you can expect the menu to start at $30.00. The Plantation House offers other selections if seafood is not your thing. The Plantation House is a world class restaurant. Hula Grill: Kaanapali: Reservations: 808-667-6636 Nestled on Kaanapali Beach in Whalers Village the Hula Grill offers everything you would expect from a world class restaurant on Maui. Lunch in the barefoot bar lends to the ambience of a beach atmosphere complete with all the people watching you can handle. The menu is light and refreshing. The Hula Grill offers mainly burgers and salads for lunch. They both wash well with a cold Corona. Dinner at the Hula Grill is outstanding. We usually dine here on Valentines Day or other special occasions. The sunsets are incredible. Seafood is the order of the day; however their steaks prepared to your liking are delicious. The Hula Grill's well rounded menu will meets everyone's tastes. Their ice cream sandwich for dessert is yummy to say the least. The menu for the Hula Grill is moderate starting at $22.00. Seafood entrees closer to $30.00. Sansei: Reservations: Kapalua: 808-669-6286 Sansei is the place to go for sushi. Period! Price is right and the selection is overwhelming. The Sushi Chef's at Sansei are the best. We enjoy Sansei every time we have visitors from the mainland. The quality of service is good and the food is great. Kimos: Lahaina Reservations: 808-661-4811 Kimos has been a staple of Lahaina dining for more than 25 years. Needless to say Kimos provides a dining experience that is one of the best in Lahaina. Reservations are recommended. Did you say Prime Rib? Kimos offers the best by far! Seafood you say? Kimos offers a variety of preparations that are unique. The flavors are sensational! The atmosphere at Kimos whether it be for lunch or dinner is open with views of island of Lanai and sail boats moored out on Lahaina Roads. Kimos is another place we take our mainland guests. You can be sure the service, the food and the experience will be one that will bring you back again and again. You can expect to spring for about $28.00 per person at Kimos. Middle of the road for Lahaina. Moose McGillycuddys: Lahaina: Reservations: 808-667-7758 Maui on a budget? Moose's offers large portions at a very reasonable price. Whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner you can expect to eat well at Moose's. The variety is huge! Breakfast: Their omelets are giant and reasonably priced Lunch: Wide variety and moderate in price. Dinner: Moose's offers a wide selection of entrees. From sizzling steaks to delicious seafood, Moose's has it all. I have a friend who comes to Maui every year for vacation and he dines at Moose's quite a bit. He claims that the food is just as good as anywhere else and the prices are more reasonable. The only draw back is there is no ocean view. That's probably why the prices are not quite as expensive as some of the ocean front restaurants. I have found the food and service at Moose's decent. Marco Grill & Deli: Reservations: Kahului: 808-877-4446 Marco's is Italian. My personal opinion is Marco's is the best Italian restaurant on Maui. Nothing fancy, just really good food. We usually dine at Marco's after a days shopping in Kahului. Marco's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The portions are huge. We usually spilt a caser salad and the seafood pasta. Really good lunch or dinner. The portions are so large that we can't finish it. The service is outstanding. Marco Grill and Deli is a local favorite. Well worth the stop. The grinds at Marco vary in price. The seafood pasta mentioned above is $24.95. The salad $10.95. Average price at Marco's is about $20.00. However there are many items under $20.00. Waterfront: Maalaea: Reservations: 808-244-9028 The Waterfront is seafood at is best. Located in Maalaea at the Milowai Condos, the sunsets are breath taking over looking the harbor. A little on the pricy side the Waterfront offer 9 different preparations for seafood; all are outstanding. Their Cesar salad is made fresh at your table and is by far the best on the Island. This restaurant has been voted the best seafood restaurant 7 of the last 10 years. Really good! The average price at the Waterfront is $30.00 a plate. Da Kitchen: Kahului: Kihei: Reservations No Need Local grinds? Da Kitchen has to locations. One in Kahului and Kihei. The menu is local style plate lunch with huge portions. Splitting a dinner would be the way to go. Prices are moderate, say about $9.00 for a plate lunch. The food is great! My daughter likes burgers a lot and it usually takes her two days to finish one from Da Kitchen. They are huge. I like to watch the expressions on people's faces when the servers bring out their orders. They are expecting such large orders. Expect to take a doggie bag home with you. Aloha Mix Plate: Lahaina: Reservations No Need Aloha Mix Plate is located on Front Street in Lahaina. With Outdoor dining, ocean views, good food and nothing over $9.00 on the menu, what more could you ask for? This restaurant is very popular for both lunch and dinner. Expect to wait for a table. The bar is small, but serves a killer Mai Tai. The Mai Tai goes well with the wait. The Aloha Mix Plates has a daily special that is a feature offering for each day of the week. If roast pork is on the menu, awuee broke the mouth it's so good! Maui Tacos: Reservations No Need Maui Tacos serves one killer fish taco. Maui Tacos is more of a take out restaurant and has locations in both West and South Maui. Their burritos are huge. With nothing over $9.00 you will definitely get your monies worth out of your meal. Try a La Perouse Burrito wet. You will have a hard time finishing this meal. Washes really well with a cold Corona. We usually call in our order and take it to one of the many beach parks on Maui. Bubba Gumps: Lahaina: Reservations: 808-661-3111 Bubba Gumps is a really fun place to dine. Shrimp heaven to say the least. Ocean front dining in Lahaina, Bubba Gumps is a great place to stop for lunch. The menu is moderate in price starting at $12.95 and capping at about $22.00. Although Bubba Gumps is open for both lunch and dinner, I enjoy lunch the best. The menu is the same all day, so take advantage of the ambience during the day for lunch, or and early dinner. The views are outstanding of the waterfront. The fun at Bubba Gumps begins with the license plates on the table. The license plates (sign) flips up with one side stating "Run Forrest Run" and the other side stating "Stop Forrest Stop". If you want the server to stop the license plate must be showing "Stop Forrest Stop". You will be surprised how quick they stop when you flip the sign over. The staff at Bubba Gump will also come around to the tables and quiz you on the movie Forrest Gump. Good food and good service. A must for dining in Lahaina. Cool Cat Café: Lahaina: Reservations No Need If you like a good burger and who doesn't, then this is the place to go. Located in Lahaina at the Wharf Cinema Center the Cool Cat Café serves one terrific burger. With a 50's setting the Cool Cat Café brings back memories from another era. The food is really good and the menu is extensive. They offer much more than just burgers. The BBQ ribs are out of this world. Burger prices average about $10.00. This is the type of burger that drips down your arms and puddles on the table. It simply doesn't get any better than this. With a view of the Banyan Tree and Front Street, the Cool Cat Café provides an active atmosphere and plenty of outside entertaining scenes of daily life of downtown Lahaina. When my family takes in a movie at the wharf we always end our day with the Cool Cat Café. The Cool Cat Café is a favorite for local families.
